SUMMER SCHOOLS

Leicester Public Schools offer a variety of extended school year options to strengthen fundamental knowledge and skills and to make up lost credit.

Summer School for Grades 8-12

Leicester students in grade 8 who fail either mathematics or English language arts courses may be required take summer school course(s) to achieve credit and advance to grade 9. A variety of factors are considered when making a final decision regarding retention. (See IKE Promotion and Retention of Students)

While the district is not obligated to provide any summer school offerings, when offered, Leicester High School students may take no more than two summer school courses to achieve credits for courses that they have not passed during the regular school year. High school students from other districts may also apply to participate in Leicester’s summer school program. Additionally, Leicester High School students may participate in summer school programs in other districts.

For Leicester students, the average of the grade received during the regular school year and the summer school grade must be 60% or higher in order to receive credit for the course. Credit for the course will be added to the student’s permanent record and will be counted toward the graduation requirement.

In addition, the following conditions apply:
1. An application for summer school must be submitted for approval.
2. Yearly attendance and disciplinary records will be considered prior to acceptance into this program.
3. Students or their families must provide their own transportation.
4. Students assume financial responsibility for the cost of the course(s) taken.
5. Students are expected to arrive on time and be present for all classes.
6. Leicester’s discipline policies apply during summer school.

Response to Intervention in Grades K-7

Leicester students in grades K-7 who have been receiving Response to Intervention services during the school year may be invited to participate in a free extended school year program during the summer. Such programming is designed each year to meet the needs of the current students, and as such may vary from year to year.

In addition, the following conditions apply:
1. Students’ families must provide transportation.
2. Students are expected to arrive on time and be present for all classes.
3. Leicester’s discipline policies apply during summer school.
